Odysseus / Four Songs For Sailors

Our latest CD is the première recording of Odysseus by Cecil Armstrong Gibbs, made in November 2007 by the London Oriana Choir and the BBC Concert Orchestra.

Armstrong Gibbs was once a favourite composer of local choral societies, but his masterpiece, the choral symphony Odysseus, has seldom been heard because it immediately preceded the Second World War and afterwards never really established itself. Yet it is a cherishable score, and if you like Vaughan Williams's A Sea Symphony you will love this tuneful and evocative work. Here Susan Gritton and Mark Stone revel in their roles as soprano and baritone soloists respectively.

Telling the familiar story of Odysseus's legendary wanderings around the eastern Mediterranean after the fall of Troy, and his return to Ithaca, Odysseus - which in fact is Gibbs's second symphony - has long been requested by enthusiasts. It is vividly realised by the London Oriana Choir and the BBC Concert Orchestra conducted by David Drummond. The choir also make Four Songs for Sailors, Dyson's tuneful songs for chorus, strings, brass and timpani, sound effortless, and with the work's theme of ships and sailors is the perfect complement to Armstrong Gibbs's epic vision.

If Love Could Say God's Name (DVD)

Recorded live at St Paul's Cathedral, this is an hour long programme in celebration of peace. Beth Nielsen Chapman performs with the London Oriana Choir, conducted by David Drummond and featuring wonderful choral arrangements by him. The programme includes songs in Hebrew and Zulu, contrasting with a new composition by Beth, Prayers of an Atheist amongst arrangements of Christian favourites such as Ave Maria, Steal Away, and Amazing Grace. The service is led by Canon Edmund Newell and the Reverand Claire Robson and there are readings from the Bible and extracts from the writings of Nobel Peace prize recipients Jody Williams, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and others.

Country Music People's Review said: "The enthusiasm, emotion and unquestionable sincerity of the performances on this unique recording are nothing short of riveting ... a stunning rendition of Give Me Jesus where the intricate harmonies of the choir leave one in little doubt that the human voice is the sweetest and most moving of all instruments."
